Welcome! I’m Daniel Bryant, a longtime software developer and, more recently, an advisor to founders, technical go-to-market leaders, and developer relations teams at start-up and scale-up B2B companies.

I write about and help companies with topics including:

  • Building and leading developer relations teams

  • Defining and communicating developer relations strategy (from a one-person team to multi-manager departments)

  • Executive/founder coaching on the value of developer relations

  • Designing and running successful technical content marketing campaigns

  • Planning and executing sponsorship of technical conferences (including running sponsored booths, ad buys, guerilla marketing tactics, and generating onsite earned media placements)

  • Building and nurturing technical and open source software (OSS) communities

  • DevRel and technical GTM funnel/pipeline assessments

  • Collaboration models for DevRel teams and other departments (marketing, product, sales, PMM, customer success, etc.)

  • Building a brand for the organization and individuals

  • Working successfully with foundations and community programs (e.g. Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Linux Foundation, Java Champions, AWS Heros)

  • Leveraging and contributing effectively to an open source software (OSS) program, whether run in-house or as part of a larger program

  • Working effectively with press relations (PR), analyst relations (AR), and other media third parties

  • Planning and implementing champion and ambassador programs

  • Building mutually beneficial cross-organization DevRel partnerships

  • Growing courgettes, beans, and tomatoes (but not avocados… yet)

About me and my recent career history

I’ve always enjoyed being a bridge between technology and people. With a career ranging from academic to Java developer to CTO (and everything in between), I’ve done some of my best work when leading developer relations teams.

My most recent gigs included:

Ambassador Labs: As employee number seven of a leading Kubernetes toolmaker, I built and ran a successful developer relations team from scratch. Together we generated 100,000s of page views of our content, frequently exceeded MQL/PQL targets, and generated a 6x sales pipeline versus our sponsorship spend on key events, such as KubeCon NA. Collectively, we contributed two OSS projects to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and were instrumental in the foundation of the Envoy Gateway project. When I left the company after a six-year tour, we had two Kubernetes tools with product-market fit, a 10k+ strong community, and millions ($) of revenue.

InfoQ/QCon: I have contributed to the InfoQ and QCon family for almost ten years, first as a writer and later as the news manager. At InfoQ, I commissioned, curated, and peer-reviewed content for a global audience of senior software development professionals with ~1,000,000 monthly views. At QCon, a flagship software development conference for senior practitioners, I have acted as a speaker, track host, PC member, and co-chair. I have presented in front of thousands of attendees at QCons, including London, New York, and San Francisco.

OpenCredo: During my roles as Principal Consultant and Chief Scientist, I frequently led the charge with the unofficial “DevRel for execs” team. In addition to leading technical teams and solving client challenges, I would present at conferences, write blogs, and generate awareness (and sales pipeline) for the organization. I also mentored other consultants in writing, public speaking, and technical marketing.
